Radish Opening night

Opening night went well at Seventh gallery last night, great turnout and compliments all round (to our face). It’s really looking and sounding great in there.

Radish
Diego Ramirez

Radish (Composition and sound design by Ryan Granger) is a performative project dealing with identity via an allegorical narrative of migration, seen through the warped lens of cult media. Focusing on the effects of cultural and psychological displacement, the work employs the idiosyncratic character of an anthropomorphic radish as a vehicle to explore the fractured identity of an imaginary migrant. The exhibition spans a quasi-cinematic single channel video, and documentation of a live performance in the CBD accompanied by the prosthetics and props employed to construct the radish character. Although by no means an anxiously personal or confessional narrative, the work is performed by the non-Australian artist and ponders on a facet of “foreignness”.

This project is supported by RMIT Link Arts & Culture.

on until the 17th of August

RADISH

…..I have started work on Diego Ramirez new Video piece titled “Radish”, an exploration of isolation, Identity crisis and alienation.

I have made the starting point interesting and borrowed a circuit from my friend Ben Kolaitis that plugs into plants and uses the electrical the conductance of the plant/s to generate a signal that is then reproduced by a little synthesiser, i then used my Moog bass synth as a filter and a delay to get some really exotic and beautiful bed sounds to start the composition. I am also referencing Arnold Schoenberg’s Concerto For Piano And Orchestra, Op. 42, Andante as a reference for some interesting piano composition.

I am really looking forward to this one, it will be shown at Seventh gallery in fitzroy starting August 2nd as a quad piece and video installation.

Latest Mix for SideShow Alley “Nathaniel Rateliff”

Nathaniel Rateiff and in the wings: ben lovett, ben howard, the staves, maz tappuni, india bourne, james marcus haney.

This was a tough one due to the wind and overload on the weeny mic capsules, but in the end it worked to the tracks advantage with the style so i am quite happy.

Enjoy.

Need a bio?

I have had to write artist “Bio’s” in the last few weeks in the third person, it’s weird writing about yourself and worse that you need to sound important enough that someone else would write a bio for you….

Eg. “After discovering Clifton Chenier shared the same complicated blood condition, Ryan’s love of piano accordion and Louisiana blues was born”    yadda yadda.

Well i heard a story on the RRR show the grapevine which talked about this

500 Letters – Generate your artist biography

Hilarious and so right and so wrong at the same time……you too can sound like a “real” artist

have fun

Out bright and early near Castlemaine last sunday to record a band named The Mae Trio for a live film clip.

The video is by Rob Zugaro and Nathan Ceddia and i had a huge hand by Jonathan Lee who works on the Side Show Alley project with me as well.

Nice 3 piece consisting of two sisters and a friend, great harmonies, reminded me of Gillian Welch, Mumford and sons et al .Looking forward to mixing.
